You can combine separate braids to create elaborate updos for special occasions. If you’re feeling young and girly, you can style your hair with braided pigtails. Braids are even functional. Popular African American Hair Braiding Styles

Popular braiding styles for African American hair include cornrows and box braids. It is common to use synthetic hair to add length and volume to cornrows. Either synthetic or human hair is used for box braids. Buy braiding hair online or from beauty supply stores. Although they are both classified as braids, box braids and cornrows are not the same. Cornrows are braids that are attached to the scalp, creating a pattern. Box braids are single braids. They look like tiny plaits. Small, thin, cornrows that are braided close together toward the nape of the neck is a nice corporate African American hair braiding style. The loose ends of the hair are then tied into a bun. A donut bun or a sock bun looks great in this popular braid style.

Invisible braids or micro braids,as they are often called meaning are braided very thin and tiny to the scalp. The natural hair is conditioned by relaxing or hot combing to make sure its texture is similar to to the extension hair. The braids are secured very tightly at the roots because they aren’t braided in very much…. maybe about an inch, if even that much…. then it’s left loose (not braiding down to the tip):  They are called “invisible” because it looks very much like the braids are coming right out of the scalp, like strands of hair, or closer to the appearance of a hair weave style.

Tree braids are different.  Tree braids are essentially cornrows done a little differently.  When doing tree braids, instead of braiding all of the hair down into the cornrow, several strands of the extension hair is left out, which gives the appearance of loose hair.   They are really cornrow  braids  with some hair left out.   Tree braids take MUCH less time than invisible braids.

Individual braids or box braids are usually divided by small squared off parts or boxes. Individual box braids may be of any width or length, but most women add synthetic or natural hair to the braid for length as well as thickness and fullness. The great thing about these   individual  braids is that they are not attached to the scalp. Individual  braids can be manipulated into several different styles, resembling styles worn in long, relaxed hair.

Stephanie Janelle Bryant is one of the finest, savvy, and innovative makeup artist and
cosmetologist in the Atlanta metro area. Her passion began at a very young age when
her mother exposed her to the profession by taking her to various shows. When

expeditions as business partners. During high school, Stephanie began her extensive
training by her mother by assisting and managing the business. After high school,
Stephanie attending Dudley Cosmetology University (DCU) in North Carolina which was

After graduating from DCU, Stephanie became a proud owner of Donjanelle Hair Salon in Atlanta since 1997. The 3,000 sq.ft.. salon is beautifully decorated with terra cotta

shampoo  artistry. Donjanelle was also published in various magazines such as

Three years later, Stephanie discovered her God-given talent as a makeup artist. She
studied and practice under various makeup artist. After perfecting the fundamentals , she developed her own signature techniques. Her specialty varies from the most natural flawless  look to trendy, high-definition colorful looks. During her years of beautifying women, she retailed and freelanced with Dudley Product Cosmetics. She also performed services for wedding, photography, and fashion shows.

There are many haircut styles available for men who wear their hair short.  Work with your texture for the best results and consult with your  barber for additional ideas. While there are many ways to style short hair, some haircuts such as fades are universally popular.

The fade is worn by men of all races, though most commonly viewed as a popular African-American hairstyle. One of the most basic haircuts available in most barbershops, it is worn by men of all ages. It comes in a few different styles, but the general appearance of any fade is that the hair starts out longer near the top of the head and gradually fades in length down the sides.

Fades hairstyles come in different types. The regular fade can be short, medium or long. The short fade, commonly referred to as the bald fade, features really short hair that is low to the head. Another type is the tapered Caesar fade, a partial fade that works with medium to short hair. This is a variation because only key parts of the head of hair are faded. Fades come in many more kinds, all with minor changes to these basic types. Some men get intricate designs cut into their fades, and some fades taper differently.

The bald fade is achieved when the customer wants his hair very short. The hair on the top of the head is the longest and the bottom edges of the head are bald. The hair gradually blends from no hair at the bottom to the longest hair at the top all the way around the head. The medium and long fades are the same except that the hair on the top is 1 inch long for medium fades and longer than 1 inch for long fades. With the tapered Caesar, all hair on the head is cut to the same length, and then the back edges of the hair and the hairs directly above where the sideburns start are blended into the rest of the rest of the hair.

The fade haircut was made popular predominantly in the ’90s, but it was gaining fans in the ’80s as well. Many African-Americans were leaving the era of Jheri curls and Afros for a cleaner-cut look. The fade is noted for its simple style, which can go from the office to the streets. It is easy to modify to suit the shape and size of a person’s head.

The fade and its variations are popular because of the versatility of the haircut. It is appropriate for business settings as well as for recreation. Good barbers have the ability to make the haircut last for two weeks, saving the customer money. The fade is also easy to line up, which is a term for when a customer wants the edges of his hairline straightened up around the head. This prolongs the haircut for another week.

The fade is one of the most common haircuts in the United States, and has become a staple in the African American community. You can see many Hip Hop stars sporting fade haircuts. The haircut is basic, and can be done in an hour or less, depending on the skill of the barber, making it a standard in barbershops around the country.

Some fade hairstyles are named based on their geographical popularity. The Brooklyn Fade, also known as the Brooklyn Blowout, is popular around the Jersey shore and other nearby places. The Brooklyn fade is a haircut that involves shaving the hair on the sides of the head short and tapered, while leaving the hair on the top longer. The hair on the top of the head is made to stand up and out with hair product. The Philly fade in the East is the same as the Temple fade in the Midwest–tapered at the temples. The tapering can carry to the sides of the head and to the neckline, depending on what the customer wants.
The following are names of popular barber cuts:

1.     The Butch

o    In a standard butch cut, hair is closely and evenly cropped all over, while being shaped to the head. The barber follows the natural hairline. This works well for straight or wavy, thick hair. Similar to a buzz cut, the butch features short, straight hairs that stand away from the scalp as they have no length or weight.

For the neatest look, keep sides and back tapered. This is a good style for most face shapes except round. It is also a low-maintenance style.

2.     Shag Cut

o    This is a messier style for men who prefer their hair a little longer. Short shags stop at about ear length in the back, while longer ones reach to the neck. Bangs are usually left to hang down; play up fringe in the back of the hair with pomade or gel. This is a mussy style that the wearer can simply roll out of bed with, tousle with the fingers and go.

Fades

o    There are different types of fades, but they all have similar characteristics: close cut sides and back, with more length on the crown. The hair should gradually and evenly taper to the longer lengths. A bad fade will not feature a gradual tapering and appears choppy.

A bald fade features nearly bald sides and back before tapering toward the crown. A medium fade is not as closely cut on the sides and back. The crown length varies on fades, but the tapering should always be gentle and gradual; there shouldn’t be obvious lines dividing sections of the hair.

Caesar Cut

o    The Caesar cut works well on straight, thick hair and very curly or wavy, textured hair. Hair is even all the way around. The style generally is complemented with thin or thick sideburns. In this style, comb hair toward the front of the head, down the sides and down the back. The front hairline should be straight and evenly cut across.

African American men often brush waves into their Caesar cuts with soft- to medium-bristle brushes.

Ivy League

o    This is a classic, low-cut style that works in any environment, from professional to casual. Hair is uniform all over and cut to fit your head shape. A slightly longer front can be parted and combed to one side. It works best with straight or slightly wavy hair and provides a neat and clean appearance.

• Black men must consider their place of employment and also their sense of individuality when choosing a hair fade. A hair fade is a style where barbers leave a portion of hair on the head and trim some hair closer to the scalp in various degrees, which gives the illusion of a fade. There are fades that are more conservative and others that are more creative. A licensed barber can professionally cut hair into your desired fade with well-trimmed edges.
• An Afro temp fade leaves a generous amount of hair on the head that gradually fades into the scalp closest to the temple area of the head.
• The bald fade leaves a shorter amount of hair on the head, about 1/2 to 1 inch, that either a small comb or brush can go through. A larger portion of the hair is faded into the scalp from the sides and the back. This more conservative style is perfect for professionals, those in the military or corporate America.
• The Low Medium Bald Fade style is similar to the bald fade, but more hair is left on the head. A small comb and brush can be used with this hairstyle. There is more hair left on the sides and back of the head. The hair is shaved halfway up the back and side of the head.
• The temp fade is maybe most recognized among black men and people familiar with ethnic hairstyles. The hair is cut evenly on the top and sides of the head. The hair is then cut closer to the scalp on the temple area of your head, toward the end of your forehead, closer your eyes and near your ear.
